The aim of the Afghanistan Waters Portal is to respond to the existing potential in knowledge production on Afghanistan’s transboundary waters and bridge the gap in information and exchange of learning. But it is only a beginning and far from complete. Afghanistan Waters Portal is an evolving medium, enriched by everyone’s contributions, particularly intellectual, but also financial. As a first step in facilitating transparent access to information on Afghanistan’s transboundary waters, the Portal requires sustained backing.
The content enrichment of the Portal relies on the knowledge produced by scholars, researchers, students, diplomats, policy analysts and government decision makers. The Portal can serve as a point of a convergence for efforts on sustainable management and development of Afghanistan’s transboundary water resources, and by doing so, can generate synergy and coordination in multi-stakeholder works.
Despite Afghanistan’s rich water resources, the sector remains severely under-studied and under invested. Lack of technical knowledge pertinent to this field remains to be a major challenge inhibiting Afghanistan’s sustainable development and management of its rivers, particularly aiming at its catalytic role in economic development. This is while regional and global experiences show that sustainable management and development of water resources has the potential to become vital asset for regional cooperation and economic development. One way of compensating for this lack in capacity is to support knowledge production and information sharing efforts, such as this Portal.
